Camp #8 @ Starr Farm Beach

A Brief History

Charles M. Jones Cottage – Camp #8 was the summer home for Charles Jones, Charlie, who was Mr. Flynn’s personal ‘man’ and served as advisor, chauffer, butler and friend to the wealthy businessman.  Mr. Flynn is believed to have constructed this cottage for Mr. Jones about the time he was building his own camp, #14.  We believe this was between 1910 and 1920.

Hi-grade wood paneling and a three-car garage made this cottage unique to many of the other more barren and ‘basic’ camps of the time.  The original structure was only one floor, the second floor added years later and the wood paneling on the second floor reflects an attempt to keep the style of the cottage intact.

Charlie would keep Mr. Flynn’s horses and carriage at his camp and bring it around to pick up Mr. Flynn to take him to his many engagements.  Later the car replaced the horses and Flynn’s boat was stored in the garage.

Charlie married a woman from Scotland, and had two children, Nan and Charlie Jr.  In the winter they lived on Shelburne Road .

The rural setting and unspoiled open space behind the home make it one of very few country homes left in the City of Burlington.
